Solving problems with Supplemental Health

At Sun Life, we continually find ways to make health and benefits easier for you and your clients. Here are a few exciting updates:

• Accident claims are fast tracked for less paperwork, more up-front benefits: Accidents almost always lead to follow-up care. To get benefits to members faster, we’re automatically paying for x-rays, physician follow up visits, and physical therapy for fractures, dislocations, strains, and sprains. No extra claim forms or documentation required.

• Critical Illness benefits for both STEMI and NSTEMI heart attacks. A heart attack is a heart attack, regardless of how severe it is. Our Critical Illness plans* can be designed to cover both STEMI and N-STEMI, because who knows what kind of heart attack someone will have? They just need to be paid so they can focus on recovery.

• First Day Admission benefits for observation stays. Increasingly, members spend days in the hospital without being admitted. So while they receive daily confinement benefits, they miss out on valuable admission benefits. This is the number one pain point for Hospital Indemnity claims. We’ve fixed that by paying First Day Admission benefits for observation stays lasting 20+ hours with our Hospital Indemnity coverage.

Important PFML updates and reminders

CO PFML – Updated private plan rules effective 7/1/2025, NICU bill and premium rate

• Effective 7/1/2025, CO introduced additional amendments to some of their private plan rules including: employer notice requirements, voluntary/ involuntary private plan termination and job protection. See the Q2 Compliance newsletter for more information.
• Effective 1/1/2026, Colorado will expand their PFML program to allow up to an additional 12 weeks of leave related to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
• Effective 1/1/2026, Colorado’s 2026 premium rate will decrease to 0.88% of wages.

ME PFML – Quarterly wage reports

• As a reminder, all employers must submit Quarterly Wage reports to Maine. Employers with an approved private plan are not required to submit contributions to the state.

MN PFML – Exemption portal is open

• Minnesota’s PFML private plan exemption portal is now open. Sun Life is preparing to assist clients with the exemption process. Please reach out to your Sun Life Employee Benefits Representative for a quote.

NY DBL/ PFL- End of COVID-19 quarantine leave

• On 7/31/2025, the NY COVID-19 quarantine leave legislation expires. Any employee out on a COVID-19 leave will continue to receive benefits for the duration of their approved leave. As of 7/31/2025, Sun Life no longer accepts new COVID-19 quarantine requests.
